Whe­re can I regis­ter for the examination?

Accor­ding to § 34a of the Trade, Com­mer­ce and Indus­try Regu­la­ti­on Act, pro­of of expert know­ledge must be pro­vi­ded befo­re a Cham­ber of Indus­try and Com­mer­ce (IHK) be pro­vi­ded. This means that you must also regis­ter for the exami­na­ti­on direct­ly the­re. In prin­ci­ple, you are free to choo­se your cham­ber of indus­try and com­mer­ce, alt­hough the exami­na­ti­on is usual­ly taken at the cham­ber of indus­try and com­mer­ce respon­si­ble for your area, eit­her at your place of resi­dence or whe­re you work. Howe­ver, you should check whe­ther the exami­na­ti­on is offe­red at all by your local IHK. You can find out more about this in the Chap­ter Exami­na­ti­on venues.
The exami­na­ti­on may not with a pri­va­te edu­ca­tio­nal insti­tu­ti­on, not online from home and also not in a for­eign lan­guage be filed.


How can I regis­ter for the exam?

The appli­ca­ti­on must in good time befo­re and most­ly in wri­ting Howe­ver, some cham­bers now offer a pos­si­bi­li­ty for the Online regis­tra­ti­on an. As a rule, the dead­line for regis­tering for the exami­na­ti­on is 3 weeks befo­re the respec­ti­ve exami­na­ti­on date at the latest. You can find fur­ther infor­ma­ti­on at Dates. The IHK will pro­vi­de you with a regis­tra­ti­on form. You can obtain the form from your local IHK, direct­ly as a down­load or, more recent­ly, some­ti­mes even as an online regis­tra­ti­on form via the web­site of the respec­ti­ve IHK. Regis­tra­ti­on can be done by post, fax and part­ly also direct­ly online!
In addi­ti­on to your address data, infor­ma­ti­on on your bir­th­day and place of birth is also requi­red, as well as your signa­tu­re for the bin­ding exami­na­ti­on regis­tra­ti­on. As con­fir­ma­ti­on of your regis­tra­ti­on, you will recei­ve a rep­ly let­ter from the IHK with the exami­na­ti­on invi­ta­ti­on, which will also be accom­pa­nied by a fee noti­ce. Plea­se make sure that you Exami­na­ti­on fees in good time to trans­fer. If no money has been recei­ved by the exami­na­ti­on date, you may not be allo­wed to take the exami­na­ti­on. It is best to enc­lo­se a bank trans­fer confirmation/receipt with your registration.


Can I with­draw from the exam?

Yes! The only ques­ti­on is for what reason or how clo­se you are to the exam. This deter­mi­nes whe­ther you still have to pay your exami­na­ti­on fees in full, in part or not at all. The regu­la­ti­ons on this vary bet­ween the cham­bers of indus­try and com­mer­ce. What is uni­form is that the with­dra­wal from the exami­na­ti­on must be made in wri­ting. If the­re are more than 2 weeks bet­ween the date of your with­dra­wal and the date of the exami­na­ti­on, you will usual­ly recei­ve a lar­ge part of the fees paid (70%) or even the full amount back. If the exami­na­ti­on invi­ta­ti­ons have alre­a­dy been sent out and/or the­re are less than 2 weeks until the date of the exami­na­ti­on, a can­cel­la­ti­on fee of 50% of the invoice amount is usual­ly due. If you are absent on the day of the exam and do not show up for the exam wit­hout an excu­se, the full amount will be due. The exam will also be con­side­red as “fai­led”. If you are absent for an important reason (e.g. ill­ness, con­firm­ed by a doctor’s cer­ti­fi­ca­te), the exami­na­ti­on will be dee­med “fai­led”. The Cham­ber of Indus­try and Com­mer­ce deci­des on the exis­tence of an important reason. More accom­mo­da­ting regu­la­ti­ons and excep­ti­ons may app­ly at spe­cial times or in excep­tio­nal cir­cum­s­tances (e.g. Coro­na pandemic).
